Poppin Hoppies By University Games

Disclaimer: I received this product to review. All opinions are my own.

My 7 year old son, Zachariah, loves playing games. From the time he was little he enjoyed puzzles, then simple card games. Now he can play just about any adult game and keep up with us. From Monopoly to Go Fish, he loves them all. His room is full of fun games and puzzles that he enjoys daily.

The product: We received the game called Poppin Hoppies from University Games, who has many other great games and activities for kids. It is a fun game and perfect for younger children. Poppin Hoppies comes with a game board, people puzzle pieces, and little "hoppies" with suction cups and springs. Everyone helps hold down the "hoppies" until the fun begins. When the designated paler gives the command, all the "poppies" are released. They pop up at random and the object is to catch as many as you can. It's harder than you'd think. Then you get to pick a coordinating color piece of your character. The first one to complete their character puzzle wins.

What we thought: Poppin Hoppies is easy for my 7 year old, but it's fun to play together. There isn't much thinking or strategy involved in this game, but it's full of energy and excitement. The little "hoppies" jumping at random sure make things interesting. My mom and I have played this with Zachariah as well. You'd think it would be really easy for the adults...but you'd be wrong. While the idea is easy, it's actually tricky to catch those little "hoppies" as they are all popping all over the place.

I like that this is an easy game to set up and play quickly. People of all ages can join in the fun. Have a fun family night with your kids with Poppin Hoppies.

Where to buy: You can find Poppin Hoppies in stores (book & game stores especially) and online.

World of Tail Towns Friends by Ganz

Ganz, the makers of the popular Webkinz, has a new Facebook game. Tail Towns Friends is not only a fun game, but you can also find lovely hand-painted figurines of the characters in the games to collect.

The product: You get to help the fun, little animal characters in this game make their business work. By meeting new characters you can harvest crops that will help run a restaurant and more.

Here is a description of the game:
Brought to you by the makers of the wildly-popular Webkinz, Ganz has created an enchanted world of mystery, rich with tales of intrigue, treachery and forbidden love just for you grown-ups! Interested?
Combining the fun of social media gameplay with timeless charm and unparalleled beauty, Tail Towns Friends offers players drama and juicy, soap opera-inspired storylines and the photo-realistic art allows players to become landscape artists to create the home and garden of their dreams.
Here is what you can enjoy while playing:
·         Players help friends and supply city businesses amidst unfolding tales of soapy drama
·         The ability to create the ultimate landscaped country getaway
·         Intertwining storylines, featuring cinematics and voice-acting
·         The ability to create the ultimate landscaped country getaway
·         Intertwining storylines, featuring cinematics and voice-acting

Tail Towns Friends also delivers a total gaming experience with custom-designed collectible fully hand-painted beautifully crafted figurines, bridging the real world with the virtual one.
Register Tail Towns Friends figurine to unlock the character’s exclusive storyline and “Secret Diary Goals,” which gives players insight into his/her life. Each figurine rewards users with an exclusive specialty virtual item as well. Registering other collectible figures’ secret codes unlocks even more Secret Diary Goals and exclusive items. The figurines are not only a great addition to the game, but also stand alone as a wonderful addition to any collector’s shelves.

What I thought: I received a cute bunny figurine that goes along with this game. I haven't played Tail Towns Friends much yet. I just started it on Facebook. So far, it's pretty fun. There are little, easy challenges like doing things on a "farm", harvesting apples, planting new trees, etc. There is a story that follows along the whole game. You are talking to several characters and they lead you to others for new tasks. It reminds me a little of the game Alice Greenthumbs or similar ones if you've played those. This one seems to be more involved with the story.

I would definitely say this is a game for adults/older kids. You have to be able to follow the dialog to figure what to do next and what is going on. It's not something my son could play. The figurine is cute. If you're into collecting knick knacks like that, they would be cute if you had several together. I don't think mine is something that I'll really use, but I don't have little knick knacks like that around my house. However, the character figurines come with a code that you can use in the game, so it makes it more fun to collect and get new codes.

Overall...it's a fun new game.

Where to buy: The game is available for free on Facebook. You can find the figurines in stores and online.

How to Connect: Go visit Tail Towns Friends on Facebook now.

Melissa & Doug Suspend Game

My son is 6 years old. He loves games. In the last few years we've had fun finding good games that we can play together and both enjoy. Games that are funny, games that challenge, games with a little competition...they're all good. And there are many good learning opportunities when children are playing games.

The product: A few months ago I saw the neatest looking game in an online newsletter from Melissa & Doug. We love their playthings. We really love their puzzles in this house. And now we're in love with their new game - Suspend.

This game reminds me a little of Jenga (you know the one with the wooden blocks you remove), but instead it uses various sizes of metal rods with grooves. The point is to add a piece one by one until they come tumbling down. You start with a certain number of pieces and play until someone runs outs (they are the winner).

It's harder than it looks. The little grooves are just enough to hook to other pieces, but sometimes not. It's tricky trying to get certain pieces to stay. And you never know where the other players are going to put their pieces which changes the whole balance of the structure.

What we thought: The first thing I noticed is that Suspend is recommended for ages 8+. My son is 6. At first I could see why this might be a little more difficult for him. The pieces are hard to manipulate and it's a little tougher for him with the hand/eye coordination to get them to go where he wants. But after we played a few times he got a better feel for it, and it was a lot of fun. We really enjoy this new game. It's easy for just two of us to play together. We take turns and try to get all of our pieces to "suspend".

I think this game is great for the whole family. I probably wouldn't recommend it for anyone under 5, but older kids will love this one. And it's pretty fun for parents too. It's fast paced, so you can play over and over or just a quick game when there isn't a lot of time to play. Suspend is one of our new favorites that will stick around for a long time at our house!

Where to buy: You can get Suspend straight from Melissa & Doug's site. It is also available in lots of stores and online many places.

How to connect: Learn more about the game on their website- http://www.melissaanddoug.com/suspend-family-game. And be sure to check out the other great Melissa & Doug toys and games while you're there. You can also find M&D on Twitter and Facebook.

Morphology Game

It's no secret that I love playing games. Finding people to play with me can be a problem sometimes. I used to play more with my family when we all go together, but once we added kids to the mix, they seem to occupy all our time now. It's pretty rare that we get to play many games. But once in a while someone will break them out, and I love it.

The product: I was introduced to a new game recently that I think is great. Morphololgy is a game that has been described as Pictionary with craft materials. This is a fun new game with a twist that you haven't seen before. Being creative and willing to try new things will help you win this game.

Morphology is a wildly fun and imaginative board game requiring players to build words in three dimensions.  Using objects such as string, wooden sticks, glass beads and colored cubes, players must create the designated object on their game card before the clock runs out. Correctly guess the words your teammates build to be the first team to reach the Final Lily Pad. For more of a challenge, you may be asked to flex your creative muscles by closing your eyes, using your weaker hand, or only pick 5 objects.  In an effort to make the game fun for the whole family, all Morphology game cards include both an “Easy” and a “Hard” word.

Happy Feet Wii Game & Pump It Up

I have a hard time finding games for the Wii that my son really likes and I don't mind him playing. So many games are rating E10+ or higher. I'm surprised at the cartoon oriented and kid-themed games that are rated this high. So it gets my son's interest only to find out he can't play that game. (I've mentioned before that I'm pretty strict with ratings on TV, movies, and games.)

As you would suspect, when we find a game that it well-made, works for younger children, and has an E rating, we are very excited. The game we found recently that is perfect is the new Happy Feet Two: The Video Game. This game is fun, easy to do, and entertaining for the whole family.

With a controller and a nunchuck and just a little bit of rhythm, anyone can figure out this fun game. The penguins from the movie Happy Feet Two are the stars. You are trying to collect music notes and other penguins by "learning" the dance moves and making them dance along.

Zachariah has enjoyed this game, and he even taught Grandma how to play (she doesn't do video games often).  If you're looking for a fun Wii game that the whole family can play look for Happy Feet Two: The Video Game in stores and online now.

If you're looking for a little more fun to wear off some energy for your kids, check our your nearest Pump It Up for a fun time. You can check them out on Facebook for their latest specials and their site for finding locations.

Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Video Game

The new movie is out. "Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" is a great movie that your whole family will love. I was able to take Zachariah to see it before Christmas. I went knowing he would like it, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it too. The Chipmunks and Chipettes are together again and on a cruise this time. Of course Alvin finds a way to spoil things for everyone. Go see this movie, your kids will thank you!

Now you can find the Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Video Game. It's currently available for Wii, Kinect for Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS. We got the game for our Wii. We enjoy our dance games. I have all of the Just Dance games and some other similar ones too. My son and I can dance together to our favorite songs. Now my son can enjoy it a little more with Alvin and the rest of the gang dancing to their own music.

I like that the Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Video Game is great fun for everyone. The songs have a wide appeal that my parents, myself and my son can all enjoy. The characters are easy to set up in the game. You can pick with Chipmunk or Chipette you want to be. And you can take survey to see which character you are most like. (Mine is Jeanette.) The dance moves are pretty simple, and as long as you are on the beat you'll do well with this. I think that it's easier for my son that the Just Dance games. The moves are simpler, so it makes it easier for him to get them.

There is only one thing that I don't like about the game. This is a common complaint with me about video games too. I have a 5 year old son who loves this type of game, but it's rated E10+. This is supposed to mean for everyone 10 years old and older. I've found that almost all of my dance games have this higher rating. I believe it's for some of the song lyrics. I haven't found anything terrible that I don't want my son listening to, so if he plays this game along with me I OK it. At least then if I do hear something I don't want him to, we can change the song or turn it off.

I think that your family will enjoy the Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. You can find it in stores and online now- Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.

Marina Games Take-Out Review

Here is a fun new game from Marina Games. This fast paced dice game is called Take-Out. The idea is simple, take out as many numbers are you can. The game comes with a cup, 10 numbered dice (with different numbers on each), and 2 regular white dice. You get to take out number combinations that add up to the number on the white dice.

The whole idea of Take-Out is to take out as many numbered dice as you can. The rest at the end of your turn get added to your score. And the last person to reach 150 points is the winner. As each person reaches that score, they are eliminated.

Take-Out is a really fun game. It's easy to play. They do recommend players ares 8 and up. That's because you have to be able to do simple math to eliminate dice. This game is easy to take with you anywhere. It comes in a small box that is easy to carry with you to parties, get togethers, and more. You can purchase Take-Out in stores across the US, just check their locator to see where it's in a store near you. And you can get it from Amazon too.

I was excited to try this game. I must admit that I'm not a big country music fan. In fact I don't know many of the songs on here. But I do like being able to have some new dances and songs with the Country Dance 2 game. The movements are pretty easy to follow. There are some songs that are harder than others, but they are denoted that way. The calorie counter feature on the game is handy. When I do my dance games, I do it to get moving and work up a sweat.

This game is rated "E10+", which is for everyone over the age of 10. I'm not really sure why it's rated higher, because we really do pay attention to ratings in our house. My son is 5 and he does not usually play games that are over an "E" rating or watch movies/shows that are rated higher than his actual age. Call me mean, but that's the general rule. There are a few exceptions, and it's on a case by case basis. I do let him play the Just Dance games with me. I understand that they rating is because of some suggestive song lyrics. So far that has not been an issue for us (as far as him picking them up), so he can play with me. I think this game is the same. Lyrics are the only thing I see for the rating being higher. I have not played all the songs yet, so I don't know for sure. But for now if my son does want to play, he must play with me only. If I heard a song I don't like him listening to, we won't play that particular one.

Zachariah was funny playing this. He doesn't get what country music is since we don't listen to it much at all. When we did the first dance, he thought the "cowboys" were pretty fun. Then we he figured out all the dances had "cowboys", he was a little confused about that. I think some of the line dance type dances are good for him and easy to pick up on, so it was fun to play with him.

Country Dance 2 Wii game is available in stores and online now. This is a great gift or stocking stuffer for the country music (or dance) lover in your life.
