Thursday Blog Hops

Thank you to all the Veterans and service members! We thank you for your service to our country!

My husband works in a government agency, so he has today as a holiday. It just so happens that it's a beautiful day in Ohio today. We went from frigid temperatures to warm sunny days. (It won't last long, and we'll have snow again before I know it.) My husband and son are taking advantage of this lovely day and getting Christmas lights hung up outside. They've done a great job, and I can't wait to see the house all lit up. (We'll check it out tonight, but we won't turn them on regularly until after Thanksgiving.)

5 Ingredient Fix Cookbook by Claire Robinson Review

Claire Robinson is a Food Network star with her own cooking show, 5 Ingredient Fix, and hosts Food Network Challenge too. This cookbook goes along with the theme of her show, 5 Ingredient Fix.

The cookbook is all about simplifying food. In the beginning of the book Robinson shares a little about her story with food and cooking. Then she explains her reasoning behind the 5 ingredients or less thing. Mainly she wants to keep food simple. You should enjoy the flavor of the food itself and not mask it with too many other things. So by using fewer ingredients you have the opportunity to enjoy it.

With the way people are cutting back with the budgets and tightening their belts, the 5 Ingredient Fix cookbook helps as well. When you're buying fewer ingredients for meals, you're spending less money. And it makes grocery shopping that much easier.

The hardcover cookbook is sturdy with beautiful photographs. The 5 Ingredient Fix cookbook is broken into easy to manage sections, Up and At 'Em, It's Five O'Clock Somewhere, Opening Act, All Day Eats, The Main Event, Sidekicks, Comfort A La Carte and Sweet Endings.

I have not had a chance yet to try any of the recipes, but here are some that sound wonderful to me- Maple Candied Bacon, Deconstructed Sweet Potato Hash with Fried Eggs, Asian Beef Roll-Ups, Creamy Grilled Corn Soup, Pork Roast with Hard Cider Gravy, Roasted Cauliflower with Dates and Pine Nuts, Smoky Roasted Peaches, Millionaire's Shortbread, and Flourless Chocolate-Lover's Cake. As you can see there are many delightful recipes. And believe me, I tried to keep the list short. Any cook will be happy to have this one in their kitchen, and it would be a great gift for Christmas for the chef in your family.

Buy It: The 5 Ingredient Fix cookbook by Claire Robinson is available in stores and online now.

The Hard to Buy For Person...

We all have that really hard to buy for person on our gift list. I know every Christmas I go crazy trying to decide  what to get certain people. My dad is hard to buy for, and I'm always at a lose for my brothers-in-law. My father-in-law can be difficult too, but Matt can handle him if I just leave it up to him to do. So, what christmas gifts do you get for that hard to buy for person?

Gift certificates are always an easy go to. For our dads, who have everything, sometimes specialty food items are good. Maybe I should look at Cafepress funny t-shirts this year. I think I could find some great ones for our dads. Entertainment gifts might be good as well. Maybe concert tickets or movie passes would work too.

Any other ideas? I might need something a little more creative this year.

Shalom Sesame Review + {Giveaway} (CLOSED)

From Sesame Street workshop comes a new DVD series- Shalom Sesame. It sets out to teach kids about Jewish culture and Israel. In the new Welcome to Israel and Chanukah: The Missing Menorah DVDs, some of the Sesame Street gang will teach you all about the Jewish culture. These DVDs also feature American and Israeli celebrities Debra Messing, Achinoam Nini, Mira Awad, Jake Gyllenhaal, Christian Applegate, Greg Kinnear, Debi Mazar and other big name talents.

Grover hosts with celebrity, Anneliese van der Pol, and they travel to Israel to meet new people, make new friends, and learn many things about the country. Throughout the DVDs you will learn Jewish cultural traditions, have lessons on Hebrew letters and words, see unique sites in Israel and learn about Jewish values too.

Shalom Sesame is not just for TV. They have also launched a website for uses at school and home at www.ShalomSesame.org. It will have content such as activities, games, videos, caregiver tips and activity suggestions for educators. This new website plus the DVDs is a great way for a Jewish child to learn more about their own culture, and it's also wonderful that other non-Jewish children (and maybe a few adults) can learn about it as well.

I like to raise a well-rounded child, and learning about new things is always a great way to achieve that. This new series from Sesame Street does a great job in teaching us about Israel and the Jewish culture. To be honest, I learned more than my son did, I think. But as he watches it more, I'm sure he'll pick up more things. It really was fun to see some of Israel and learn about their culture in Welcome to Israel. And in Chanukah: The Missing Menorah we learned all about the approaching Chanukah holiday. It was perfect for this time of year.

Spry Tooth Gel Review

Xlear Inc. has come up with all-natural toothpaste that kids will love. Their strawberry-banana flavored Spry Tooth Gel is made with 100% xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sweetener that helps reduce the risk of tooth decay. They developed this gel so younger kids and babies could use it to keep their teeth and gums clean and healthy from an early age. Spry Tooth Gel can be used with kids as young as 3 months old. It is safe for them to swallow and also sugar-free and fluoride-free.

Spry Tooth Gel is part of the Spry Dental Defense System from Xlear. They have a whole line of toothpaste, gum, mints, mouth rinse and mouth spray too. Xlear has also partnered with Live-Right with a combo kit with a Baby Banana Brush and the strawberry-banana flavored Spry Tooth Gel. The toothbrush is made just for little kids' hands. It makes them easy to start brushing their own teeth and learning to care for them young. The gel comes in a 2-oz. tube, and the Baby Banana Brush is soft and flexible for ages 12 months and older. It's non-allergenic, latex-free and dishwasher safe too.

We received the combo with the Baby Banana Brush and strawberry-banana flavored Spry Tooth Gel, and we also tried the original Spry Tooth Gel. My son is 4 years old, so he's a bit above the targeted age, especially for the toothbrush. The toothbrush is the perfect size for little 1 or 2-year-old hands, though. It's chunky and easy for them to hold, plus with the soft bristles they will do well with it. I like that the toothpaste is all-natural, sugar-free and fluoride-free. Even though Zachariah is old enough to spit out his toothpaste, he still swallows a little every now and then. So I try to make sure that he uses something that's safe for him. He didn't care for the original flavored one, but I think for a baby it would be best. The strawberry-banana flavored one was better for him.

Buy It: Spry Tooth Gel is available in many natural foods stores in your area.

*Disclosure: This post was written for Family Review Network & Xlear who provided the complimentary product for review in exchange for my honest opinions.*

Monday 11/8/10 Winner!

The winner of the Thomas & Friends: Merry Winter Wish DVD is...

#1 - Rachel

Yep, that's really the number that random.org drew. Sometimes it pays to be prompt, but mostly you can see that I get truly random numbers from them.

Congrats to the winner! An e-mail is already on its way to you. You will have 48 hours to respond, or I will draw a new winner.

Be sure to check my blog for the other giveaways going on now.

Bing "Our School Needs"

Bing has an awesome contest going on right now. They are awarding $250,000 in prize money divided between four schools in need. And you can help! The entry with the most votes will received $100,000 then the other 3 will each get $50,000.

Bing is also giving away $900,000 to schools in need through DonorsChoose.org. It's a non-profit website where public school teachers can post classroom projects that need funding. Be one of the first 30,000 to vote for your favorite finalists each day and receive $3 donation code to redeem for the classroom project of your choice!

They are asking America to vote on the 15 Our School Needs finalists, who were determined by a panel of judges. The voting runs through Sunday, November 7th. So go choose which school you feel deserves this money the most. What a great way to take part in a special project like this.

Education is so important to every child, and we all know that some schools do not have the best resources for their students. A few years ago our local school was in need. With my teaching background, I have done a lot of work in that school. It was hard to see cutbacks being made. Class sizes got larger. And sports became pay to participate, which meant not everyone who wanted to could play if they couldn't afford it. It was sad to see them lose funding. Thank goodness the community rallied together and finally passed a levy to renew the funding they needed.  Every little thing that you can do will help this project along. Thanks for helping!

VOTE NOW!

*I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Bing and received a gift card and DonorsChoose.org giving code to thank me for taking the time to participate.*

Angelina Ballerina: Nutcracker Sweet DVD Review + {Giveaway} (CLOSED)

The sweet little ballerina is back, and she's helping to celebrate the holidays with the timeless Nutcracker story. Angelina Ballerina: Nutcracker Sweet on DVD is perfect for your little ballerina lover. Angelina Ballerina is back and she is CG animated. She is a clever little mouse who always has a positive outlook and of course loves to dance.

Just like other children, Angelina dreams of sugarplums. She is very excited that she gets to perform in the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. When she eats too many sweets, her tummy ache threatens to keep her home. But learning to share with friends is the ultimate lesson here, and Angelina finds that it's so much better that way.

The Angelina Ballerina: Nutcracker Sweet DVD includes the following episodes "Angelina and the Front Row Ticket," "Angelina's Holiday Treats," "Angelina and Alice Mousikova," Angelina's Gift for Ms. Mimi," and "Angelina Keeps the Peace." This fun DVD also contains "Prima Ballerina Puzzle Games" and "Front Row Seats" Karaoke for your kids to play along. The video is targeted at children ages 2-7 years old and runs about 61 minutes long.

We enjoyed this DVD. The holiday themes get us in the mood for Christmas. But my son can also learn important lessons that are taught through the fun characters like Angelina Ballerina. This is a great preschool DVD for this holiday season.

http://www.waldenu.edu Review

I believe that education is really important. Even though I'm a stay at home mom (a job which I love), I am glad that I took the time to get my college education too. At some point I might decide to go back and get my master's degree in education of some sort, but I'm not ready to do that quite yet.

The Chronicle is a website for higher education. They share advice and information that you might need to pursue a higher college degree. Walden University is a school that offers online degrees like M.S. in education, M.S. in Mental Health Counseling, M.B.A, and many more programs. Higher Education is very important. These websites might be a good place to start if you're looking.

“The Way Home” DVD Review

What happens when a family starts to lose touch? Will a crisis lead them back to God? In "The Way Home" you'll see a family who learns to lean on God and family and friends when their little boy goes missing. Through friends, prayer, and lots of faith they wait for the return of their son.

This movie was very powerful. As a parent myself, it was easy to imagine how I would react in a tragic situation like this family experienced. Through prayer the friends and neighbors all pulled together with strength and encouragement for the Simpkins family. And as a married couple, Randy Simpkins, played by Dean Cain, and his wife learn to trust and depend on each other.

"The Way Home" is a must see for families everywhere. It will make you look at your faith and think about how you'd react in a crisis. Would you be like Mrs. Simpkins who leaned on family and friends? Or would you be more like Randy Simpkins who was stubborn and then learned that God really is in control?

Buy It: "The Way Home" is available in stores and online.

HALO SleepSack Review + {Giveaway} (CLOSED)

I think ever parent I know is concerned about SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) with their newborns and babies. It's the scariest thing ever to think about your child dying. And we, as parents, try to do everything we can to protect our children and keep them as safe as possible.

Sadly there are still babies dying from SIDS every year. A good friend of mine from church just lost her only grandchild to SIDS only a few weeks ago. It was sudden and tragic. I know their family will never get over the hurt and loss of their precious 9 month old son and grandson. Even though I never met my friend's grandson, I still feel the loss for her. In fact I've had a hard time bringing myself to write this review and put it off because of this tragedy. I was already going to do this review before his passing. It just made the SIDS issue way more real and alive in my life.

So, how can you help to prevent SIDS? There are several important things that you can do. First, always put the baby "Back to Sleep". I think this is ingrained in most new parents. Babies should sleep on their backs. But do your caregivers know how important it is to lay your baby on his/her back too? My parents let us sleep on our tummies. As parents, we need to make sure that everyone who cares for our child takes care of our child like we would. If that means teaching them about "Back to Sleep", then please do that.

HALO was founded by a father who lost his daughter. They have made a great product that helps to prevent SIDS. The HALO SleepSack keeps your baby warm and snug in bed without the use of loose blankets. Your baby can't kick this blanket off, so you won't have to worry about them getting cold during the night either.

HALO SleepSacks are now available in Target stores. They carry several varieties and sizes. They have the SleepSack Swaddle in cotton for newborns available in dot and dog patterns. The SleepSack Swaddle in micro fleece is in cream-colored newborn size. In size small they have the SleepSack in cotton and microfleece in the same colors/patterns as the other. And in medium they have the SleepSack in cotton with the chose of pink dot or blue dot and in micro fleece with the pink burnout or blue burnout pattern. These and many more can all be found at your local Target store or at Target.com.

We got to try the SleepSack in blue burnout micro fleece size medium for my 5 month old nephew. I babysit for him 4 days a week and I always lay him "back to sleep". With the warm fuzzy SleepSack for these cooler days, I know he will stay warm for his naps without extra blankets around him. And he is notorious for kicking off his blankets, but the SleepSack is snug around his legs for extra warmth. I think the SleepSack is great, and it is definitely a must have with any baby. I will be sure to get the SleepSack
Swaddle when we have another baby.

Here are some statistics and tips for you and your children's caregivers:

HALO’s survey of more than 1,000 parents and grandparents revealed the following:

•    58% of grandparents agreed that “babies are babies; what worked years ago when my children were babies is still fine today.” Conversely, 60% of parents disagreed with this opinion.
•    Parents are more likely to say that it’s best to place a baby on his or her back to sleep than grandparents (77% vs. 59%). Grandparents are more likely than parents to think a baby is safest sleeping on his or her side (21% vs. 12%) or stomach (16% vs. 8%).
•    Grandparents are also more likely to believe it is safe to have loose blankets (49% vs. 31% of parents) and a baby monitor (23% vs. 12%) in the crib with the baby.
•    82% of parents say they swaddle their baby for sleep compared to less than half of grandparents who swaddle their grandchildren (46%).

Safe Sleep Practices
•    Place baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and at night time.
•    Use a crib that meets current safety standards with a firm mattress that fits snuggly and is covered with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.
•    Remove all soft bedding and toys from your baby’s sleep area (this includes loose blankets, bumpers and positioners). The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests using a wearable blanket instead of loose blankets to keep your baby warm.
•    Offer a pacifier when putting baby to sleep. If breastfeeding, introduce pacifier after one month or after breastfeeding has been established.
•    Breastfeed, if possible, but when finished, put your baby back to sleep in his or her separate safe sleep area alongside your bed.
•    Never put your baby to sleep on any soft surface (adult beds, sofas, chairs, water beds, quilts, sheep skins etc.)
•    Never dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep room temperature 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
•    Never allow anyone to smoke around your baby or take your baby into a room or car where someone has recently smoked.

There's not much time left, but I wanted to make sure to post this. HALO is donating $1 to SIDS Awareness for each new fan to "like" HALO on Facebook in September and October. And even if you miss out on that, you can connect to HALO on Twitter and Facebook.
