Barney and Thomas & Friends On-The-Go DVD Sets Review

Traveling is what summer is all about. Many families take vacations. And even if you don't, most people take at least some sort of trip away from home in the summer. Trips are fun and exciting and sometimes a brand new adventure. But if you've ever traveled with a kid…let's be honest, they can suck the fun right out of any trip (even the ones we make for them).

Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment have introduced new Barney and Thomas & Friends DVD sets that come in a convenient carrying case for on the go fun and entertainment. Each contain 3 DVDs and have spots for even more DVDs inside the case. You can take your whole Barney collection along this year. :D

The Barney On-The-Go Pack of DVDs include

  • "Red, White, Blue"- a DVD all about red, white and blue things that Barney and his friends discover and learn about together. This DVD includes a Read-Along Story- "Barney's Book of Hugs" and the run time is about 35 minutes.
  • "Barney's Colorful World Live!"- Your children can watch Barney's live stage show along with many of Barney's friends and many sign-along songs. It includes "Barney's Jukebox" with 22 songs; a Read-Along "Tour Guide"; a mini-featurette "People, Places & Animals Adventure," and 5 bonus episodes of Bob the Builder, Rubbadubbers, Angelina Ballerina, Kipper and Pingu. The run time for this DVD is approximately 69 minutes.
  • "Happy Mad Silly Sad"- Barney encourages his friends to learn about emotions, manners, sharing and more. Barney always helps kids have a fun time. It includes a Read-Along "Barney's Book of Hugs" and games "What's Different?" "Make-a-Mask" and "Barney's Heart Maze." The run time for this DVD is about 45 minutes.
The Thomas On-The-Go Pack DVDs are

  • "Hooray for Thomas"- Thomas saves the day and wins a medal for it. The children ride on the tracks, and Edward rescues a band. There is so much to celebrate! It also includes a Read-Along story "The Great Race," a Sing-Along song "The Red Balloon," and some bonus DVD games. The run time is about 35 minutes.
  • "Trust Thomas"- Thomas is out on an adventure. The DVD also has a Character Gallery, Sing-Along song "Harold the Helicopter," and a "Sir Topham Hatt's Word Fun" game. This DVD runs about 40 minutes.
  • "Thomas, Percy & the Dragon"- The bravest engines take on a challenge. It has a Read-Along story "Thomas, Percy & the Dragon," the sing-along "Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining," and the "Paint My Color" game. And it runs about 37 minutes.
Since my son is a huge fan of Barney and Thomas both, he loved these DVD sets. He started watching the new DVDs the day we got them. The carrying cases are very handy. We've using one for his CDs to take them along in the car. We don't have a DVD player for the car yet, but we're thinking about getting one for summer travel (any suggestions?). I know these new DVDs would be a big hit and make all the car rides we have ahead easier.

The DVDs themselves are good. The carrying cases are good quality and handy. The only thing I've noticed about them that I don't like is that they are open. The DVDs could slide out the top (in fact I've already done that once or twice) and especially with kids I know they will slip out. A zippered pouch would be a little handier with young children. But this one is easier for my son to open and close with its Velcro attachment.

Buy It: The Barney and Thomas On-the-Go Packs are available in stores just in time for summer. You can also get them online.

Being a Friend DVD Review + {Giveaway} (CLOSED)

From Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment your child's favorites are back again. Barney, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, and Thomas & Friends are seeking adventure and making new friends in the new Being A Friend DVD.

Thomas helps teach his friend Emily a lesson in being kind. Lofty and Bob the Builder want to save the Banana Tree for the Botanical Garden, but he needs to accept help from others in order to accomplish it. Barney helps a new kid on the block make friends and feel welcome. And Fireman Sam will never leave someone behind. All these great characters help your children to see how important friendships are to our lives. And all these stories are in one place on the Being A Friend DVD, which is available in stores now.

Being A Friend includes the following episodes: Thomas & Friends – "Emily and the Garbage," Bob the Builder – "Lofty's Banana Tree," Barney – "Making A Move," Fireman Sam – "Norm's Invisible Friend." Plus there is a bonus episode of the all new CGI animated Angelina Ballerina in "Angelina's Dance Partner."

My son really enjoyed this DVD. He is at a great age to be making and learning about friends. And of course he's always loved all the HIT characters. We always love the mixed DVD's like this with the different characters all in one.

This DVD is geared toward preschoolers, ages 2-5 years old. It runs about 59 minutes long.

100% Columbian Coffee Sweepstakes

Are you a coffee drinker? Do you know a coffee drinker? If you answered no to both of those, I don't believe you. Ha!

I happen to fall in the not a coffee drinker category, but I know many many people do drink coffee. And I love the smell of coffee. I worked in a café for a year and am an awesome barista. I know that the coffee (or espresso sometimes) that goes into special drinks is the most important thing.

Many coffee brands are using 100% Colombian Coffee. They claim to be the "richest coffee in the world." And 100% Columbian Coffee has a sweepstakes going on now. You can learn about their philosophy and enter to win great prizes at www.whatsbehindthebest.com. You don't have to be a coffee drinker to enter, either. The grand prize is $10,000!

*Disclaimer: I was not paid for this post. I am, however, being entered into a giveaway for a gift card for posting this.*

"Achieve Anything in Just One Year" Book Review + {Giveaway}

Uplifting words. Words of encouragement. Setting goals. Meeting our goals. Achieving success. Living the dream. These are all great things. And these are all things I've found so far in the book "Achieve Anything in Just One Year: Be Inspired Daily to Live Your Dream and Accomplish Your Goals" by Jason Harvey.

"Achieve Anything in Just One Year: Be Inspired Daily to Live Your Dream and Accomplish Your Goals" by Jason Harvey is a self-improvement book. It's laid out in a day by day easy-to-read format. Each page/day has new encouragements, goals, and some have little "homework" assignments. It's all meant to keep you uplifted and on track to meet your goal.

From the "Achieve Anything in Just One Year: Be Inspired Daily to Live Your Dream and Accomplish Your Goals" website: Feel happier everyday! Overcome procrastination. Set goals and stick with them. Stay motivated, focused and balanced. Find out what you really want from life. Take daily action that creates a ripple effect. Define, pursue and celebrate personal success. You will learn how to make small daily choices that will transform your life, find your personal inspiration and rediscover your motivation. This will propel you out of an unfulfilling existence and into the happy, fulfilling life you deserve.

I found this book inspiring and stretching. I have not gone through the whole book (because that would take a year), but I've enjoyed the start of it. It made me step back and view my life from the outside. For instance, in the first day your assignment is to write down any dreams that you have as you think of them. While I haven't done that completely, I did appreciate the thought. Being about to look at my life and see what kind of goals that I've set (or need to set) for myself is eye opening. I learned more about myself.

The one thing about this book that I think people may not like is what makes it good too. It's so positive and upbeat. It's hard to commit to something like that every day. I'm a very optimistic person, so the upbeat cheerfulness each day didn't really bother me. I just know it would get to some people. But if you're a pessimist, maybe this is the book you need!

"Achieve Anything in Just One Year: Be Inspired Daily to Live Your Dream and Accomplish Your Goals" by Jason Harvey is a good self-help book. If you need something to get yourself on track, this is the book for you. I also think it would make a great gift for someone starting a new chapter in their lives. And it would be a good graduation gift with that season upon us.

The Money Answer Book Review + {Giveaway}

I'm sure most of you have heard of Dave Ramsey, a Christian financial expert. If you haven't, go check out his website at the very least. This man has lots of financial wisdom. Matt & I took his Financial Peace University class a few years ago. It has truly changed our lives and outlook on money/finances.

"The Money Answer Book" is the latest book from Dave Ramsey. In it he uses his experience and wisdom to answer some of the most common questions about money. These are the 100+ most-asked questions from his radio talk show. He gives short precise explanations to questions about debt and credit to insurance and retirement.

This book is very easy to read. Even if you aren't an avid reader (especially if you aren't an avid reader), this book is for you. Five minutes of time will get you through several questions and answers here. This book contained so many topics that are relevant to me right now. Of course there are things that I'm not ready for yet, like investing, but I do like to be prepared for when that day arrives. That left me feeling like the book touched on a little of everything for everyone.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I know that you will too. It would be a great gift for any new couple, recent graduate, new parent, friends, family, anyone! Any adult who spends or saves money can use this book in some way.

Buy It:
"The Money Answer Book" by Dave Ramsey is available in store everywhere now and online as well.

Win It: I loved this book so much, that I hate to hang onto my copy. I would rather pass it along and bless someone else with it. So one of you lucky readers can win "The Money Answer Book" for yourself or someone else in your life.

To Enter: Tell me who you'd like to win this book for (yourself, your spouse, or maybe for a gift). Be sure to include your e-mail address in your first comment, so I can contact you when you win. (If I can't find an e-mail address in your profile or don't already have it, I will draw a new number for the winner.)

Shushybye Book & CD Review + {Giveaway} (CLOSED)

Sleep. That's one thing that we all want our children to do. It's a relief when they are snuggled down each night safe and sound in their beds. I don't know about you, but bedtime can be one of the most stressful times of our day. It should be the opposite. But the truth is that most kids fight sleep.

If you're like me, I'm always looking for ways to help my son sleep better. Enter Shushybye. Shushybye offers children's entertainment to prepare them for a restful night's sleep. They aim to help children look forward to bedtime. Now that is a concept I really like!

Shushybye products span from CD's, DVD's, Bedtime Storybooks, Sleepwear and more. Shushybye is geared towards toddlers and preschoolers. It's an imaginative world of dreamland. From the publisher "Shushybye is the original dream-themed entertainment brand for preschoolers, encompassing a national television series on BabyFirstTV and Comcast Video on Demand, a series of bedtime storybooks from St. Martin's Press, music CD's from E1 Entertainment (formerly Koch Records), toys and plush dolls, DVD's from PBS Video and sleepwear."

We got the chance to check out the "Shushybye Sleepover Surprise" book with CD and the "Close Your Eyes" CD. "Shushybye Sleepover Surprise" is a fun, imaginative, adventurous book about the Shushies in the Land of Shushybye and two children who come to visit them in their dreams. Shushies are little people/creatures who make children's dreams come true. Zeez, Dozie, Snoozles, and the other Shushies help Leo and Leona have a great time in their dreams.

The book was great. My son loved it. He has a great imagination himself, so this was right up his alley. The first few times I read the book, I had trouble with all the names. Zeez, Dozie, Snoozles. While create and cute, they become tongue twisters when you're reading them altogether and over and over. It did get easier after the first few times, though. And now my son knows who all the Shushies are by name. The book also comes with a CD inside. The CD features the story and 3 songs- Shushybye Theme Song, The Shushybye Lullaby, and Shushybye Blues.

The CD "Close Your Eyes" features The Shushybye Dream Band. The songs it includes are Feels Like Magic, It's a Shushy Day, Pillow Park Rock, Beyond the Stars and Past the Moon, Shushybye Boogie Tonight, Who's Makin' Dreams, The Snort and Wheez Theme Song, The Shushybye Blues, Close Your Eyes, Send Your Dream Wish, and It's Evening. Zachariah loved the CD. He listens to CD's each night as he falls asleep. This one is perfect for that.

If you think this is something that your kids will love, be sure to check out their website www.shushybye.com. There are so many great things on the site. There is a place where you can e-mail your children's dreams to the Shushies, and the Shushies will e-mail back. You can also meet all the Shushies and see the different products they have to offer. The Shushybye Dream Band is touring now, so you can also look for their tour dates near you on the site.

Buy It: The Shushybye products are available from their website, the DVD from walmart.com, and several of their products are available online from Amazon- Shushybye & Goodnight CD, Shushybye and Goodnight: The Deluxe Edition CD, Close Your Eyes book, Close Your Eyes CD, Sleepover Surprise book and more.

Win It: One lucky person will win their own copy of the book that we reviewed Shushybye Sleepover Surprise with CD.

To Enter: Go to their website, then tell me a product you'd like, a character you relate to, or something else interesting you learned about the Shushies. Be sure to include your e-mail address, so I can contact you when you win. (If I can't find an e-mail address in your profile or don't already have it, I will draw a new number for the winner.)

Extra Entries: If you'd like to, you may earn extra entries for doing each of the following. Be sure to leave a separate comment for each. You must do the above (main) entry first, and then you can do these others.

Playtex Bra Makeover

Some days I can't stand my bras. I will throw it off in the evening if we're staying home just to get out of it. But I am glad that I have found some bras that offer more support that I need.

Did you know, though, that 7 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong size bra? I believe it. I wore the wrong size for a long time. When I finally got sized, I was surprised that I was actually a full cup bigger than I was wearing. Wearing the wrong size can cause all sorts of problems, like back and shoulder pain and bruising and digging.

So Playtex has started a new contest. You can go to their site www.PlaytexBraMakeover.com to sign up to win a Bra Makeover for yourself or nominate a friend. If you are the lucky winner, you will get to fly to New York to receive a Bra Makeover with style expert Alison Deyette. "Alison Deyette is a fashion and trend lifestyle expert who has been featured on Bravo's Millionaire Matchmaker and TLC's Ten Years Younger, as well as in print publications including Good Housekeeping, The Washington Post, and O Magazine."

Go sign up for your chance to win the Bra Makeover today! The last day to apply is Friday, May 21st, 2010.

Also the 10 winners selected for the Bra Makeover get to appear it their own webisode where they will get a fitting with Deyette and also take away the perfect Playtex products. A new webisode will air on www.PlaytexBraMakeover.com every two weeks.

Good luck!

Discloser: By posting this information, I am entered into a contest to win a free bra from Playtex. I did not receive any compensation for this post and thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Happy Mother’s Day

I hope that all you mom's out there have a fantastic Mother's Day!

John Deere DVD Winner

I'm a few days behind on choosing a winner, but I didn't forget.

The winner of the John Deere Earth Mover Action DVD is…

    #15 – Kelly H

Congrats, Kelly! I will be sending you an e-mail. You have 48 hours to respond, or I will draw a new winner.

Thanks to everyone else who signed up. I have a new giveaway open and more coming. Be sure to check the list at the right hand side of my blog page.

Testing a new format

After talking to my husband this morning, I have a few options for posting that I'm going to try. I knew talking to him would help, but he was already in bed last night when I was completely frustrated.

It looks like my biggest problem is that I compose my blog posts using Blogger's "compose" option. While it is user friendly and easy to use (which I really like), it does create some formatting problems when I post.

So, I'm going to try using Microsoft Word's Blog Post composer for a bit and see what happens there. I don't know if it will do everything that I'm looking for it to do, though.

A few months ago I read somewhere (on a blog I don't remember where) about a blog composer that you can download to your desktop. The person who was using it said how great is was and how much she liked it for her blog. I don't think I marked the post that I saw that one, and I really wish I would have now.

I'm still open to suggestion if any of you have some. I want to stay with Blogger, but I could use some new blog composing ideas.

Blog help needed- Formatting issues

Grr, I'm not happy with Blogger right now. My last post had so many formatting problems. I kept trying to edit, fix it, repost, over and over. It did not end well, as you can see below.

I've had this happen before and it drives me CRAZY!

I just want some consistency in my blog posts. But I don't want to retype everything that I post over and over (like the giveaway details).  I think that my cutting and pasting is what's messing up the formatting. I refuse to type every single thing each time I post a new giveaway though.

Here's what I need help with. What do you use to write your blog posts?

I've always done mine right in the Blogger provided compose window.  I've tried typing in Word and pasting here, but I do lose some formatting options that way. I might have to deal with that for now, though.

Are there any other options out there? Please share with me what you use.

Thanks in advance!

Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk Review +{Giveaway}

Horizon Milk recently contacted me to try their Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3.  I have never tried any Horizon products before, but I have heard good things about it from friends.  So I was excited to give it a try for myself.

My son loves chocolate milk, but I don't give it to him often.  I don't like all the extra sugar that comes along with it. On the other hand, I do think once in a while is OK just to get him to drink a little more milk.  So when I saw the Horizon milk had so many extra health benefits, I was happy to give something like this to my son.

Here is some more about Horizon milk from the company:

Mmm chocolate! Horizon Organic lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3 provides a great tasting and easy way to add calcium and DHA to your family’s diet. DHA Omega-3 is an important nutrient that helps support heart, brain and eye health, and it’s available in lowfat half gallons.

DHA belongs to a category of healthy fatty acids known as Omega-3's. Found in high concentrations in the tissues of the brain and eye, DHA Omega-3 is thought to help support healthy function in these areas. DHA has also been shown to help support heart health.
· DHA provides a nutritional boost for children's growing minds and bodies. Children's brains grow incredibly fast. In fact, the brain nearly quadruples in the first five years of life.
· DHA is a key structural component of the brain, yet many young children don't get their recommended daily amount of DHA as it is found in a limited number of food sources.
Horizon Organic Milk Plus DHA Omega-3 is fortified with a natural, 100 percent vegetarian and sustainable source of DHA - a safe, wholesome, delicious way to bring more of this important nutrient into your family's diet.
Visit http://www.horizonorganicdha.com/ to learn more!
Flavored Milk is a Nutrient-Rich Beverage
·      Flavored milk provides the same nine essential nutrients as unflavored milk (calcium, potassium, phosphorous, protein, vitamins A, D, B12, Riboflavin and niacin), and can help kids meet their calcium requirements.
·      Flavored milk consumers did not have higher total fat or calorie intakes than non milk consumers
Kids Love the Taste of Flavored Milk
·      According to 2005 USDA data, 66% of the milk chosen by children in schools is flavored

Chocolate Milk is an Effective Post-Exercise Recovery Beverage
·      A 2006 study showed that low fat milk was as effective at post-exercise rehydration as sports drinks
·      Because of the natural carb:pro ratio in flavored milks, low fat chocolate milk is an effective post-exercise recovery beverage.
·   The appropriate carb:pro ratio for improving endurance performance is about 4:1 However, effective ranges can vary from 2:1 and up to 5:1.
·      Consuming carbohydrate and protein post workout has been shown to:
·   Enhance muscle glycogen formation
·   Promote a hormonal environment that encourages muscle growth
·   Promote muscle protein production
·   May lessen immune-suppressive effects due of intense exercise

We really enjoyed our Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3.  It did not last very long in our house. I think that my son drank more milk that week than he has in a long time.  I thought the milk was creamy and the chocolate flavor was right on for me.  I don't care for thicker milk or too much chocolate flavor, and I thought the Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3 had a great balance of both of those things.

However, my husband did not care for the flavor of this milk.  Unlike me, though, he likes his chocolate milk pretty thick and very chocolaty.

And my 4 year old son, Zachariah, thought this milk was great. He's never been too picky about differences in things, so it won't affect what he will and won't eat just because it's different. He has always loved chocolate milk, and this was no different for him. He had no problems finishing his milk with supper each night.

Buy It: Horizon Organic Lowfat Chocolate Milk with DHA Omega-3 is available for purchase in stores.  Look to see where you can get it in your area using their product locator.
