Pregnant? Get Fit for Motherhood

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of CryoCell International for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Are you pregnant or would like to be? Being a new mother/mother-to-be is a great experience. Growing a new life inside is something that is unlike anything else. As a new mom we try to do everything right. We eat right, because the food is going to the baby too. We exercise to prepare for the birth of our baby and keep our bodies in shape. We all want the very best start for our babies right from the beginning.

Another way that you can help your baby is to bank their cord blood. Cryo-Cell Cord Bank knows just how to do that. They have helped more than 230,000 families around the world save their baby's cord blood. Cryo-Cell is a pioneer in research. They are searching for non-controversial ways to preserve cord blood. And they are finding that cord blookd is a great step in new medical advancements.

Cryo-Cell also knows that new moms want to get in shape. Once the baby arrives there is little time just for mom. And it's hard to make time to exercise, even when we want to do it.  Cryo-Cell thinks the health of mothers and babies alike is very important. The award-winning Baby Jogger City Mini stroller is a great way for new moms to work out, enjoy the fresh air outside, and spend time with their new baby.

When you enroll today in Cryo-Cell's signature U-cord service, you will receive a free Baby Jogger City Mini. What a great way for you to celebrate your new baby and get your body back in shape as well.

“Here, Home, Hope” by Kaira Rouda Book Review

HereHomeHope-FinalCover

Going through changes in life always make us reevaluate the way we’re doing things. Am I truly happy? What do I want to accomplish? What kind of goals should I have? What can I do to achieve them? What are my passions? I think we’ve all gone through times where we take a step back from our lives and take stock of what’s really going on.

In Here, Home, Hope by Kaira Rouda you might get some inspiration from the main character to jump start something new in your life. And the book is a great summer read. This is a chick lit book with some honest to goodness inspiration. I really enjoyed it.

Kelly Mills Johnson becomes restless in her thirty-ninth year. An appetite for more forces her to take stock of her ordinary middle-American existence and her neighbors’ seemingly perfect lives. Her marriage to a successful attorney has settled into a comfortable routine, and being the mother of two adorable sons has been rewarding but exhausting. Meanwhile, Kelly’s own passions lie wasted. She eyes with envy the lives of her two best friends, Kathryn and Charlotte, both beautiful, successful businesswomen who seem to have it all. Kelly takes charge of her life, devising a midlife makeover plan.

”I found Kaira Rouda’s debut novel, Here, Home, Hope, inspiring, empowering and fun to read. You’ll want to share it with the women you care about in your life.” — Roma Downey, actress/producer

This book hit home right now. Like Kelly, I find myself in a new stage of life. As a stay at home mom of one child, I am trying to decide what’s in store for me when my son enters school in the fall. I still want to be available to him, but I find myself wondering if a part-time job would be a good option too. For me that problem is that I really don’t want to work right now. I want to be able to volunteer in my son’s classroom, I want to participate in daytime bible studies at my church, I want to learn to be a great homemaker for my family, and I want to continue teaching my son everything I possibly can when he is home. Still I find myself at a crossroads and a life change. Who knows where the road will lead. After reading this book, though, I know I want to set some goals that I can reach and find time for myself too.

You’ll want to make sure to check out author Kaira Rouda’s website for more information about her, and like me you’ll want to see what other great books Kaira has written. And Kaira is on a summer book signing tour, so see if she’s coming to a town near you. To keep in touch with Kaira Rouda add her on Twitter and ‘Like’ her on Facebook. You can purchase Here, Home, Hope by Kaira Rouda in several locations including Amazon.com.

Patchwork Dreams by Laura Hilton Book Review + {Amish Gift Set Giveaway – Ends 6/17} (CLOSED)

Patchwork Dreams

The simplicity of the Amish has always intrigued me. I grew up where there were Amish families living not too far away. We often saw buggies and tried to pick out the houses that they lived in (the ones without electricity running to them from the road). It’s just such a different culture all it’s own.

In the book “Patchwork Dreams” by Laura Hilton you can fit right into a modern day Amish family. They even come with their own sets of problems and concerns. This book was very fun to read. It really immerses you in the Amish culture. Once I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down. And one of my favorite parts is that part of the story is told from the prospective of an Amish teenage boy. I’ve read many different Amish fiction books, but this is the first I’ve seen from this perspective. It just forced me to see things a little differently, and I truly enjoyed that.

Book Summary
Becky Troyer has committed the ultimate sin, and finds herself on the edge of her Amish community. Jacob Miller believes he was sent to the Old Order Community in Missouri to help out a distant cousin. Instead, he discovers he was part of an arranged swap—sending men from his Pennsylvania district to the Missouri district to bring new blood into the Amish community. Becky dreams of marriage, but doesn't dare hope that anyone would choose her—not with her history. Can God use the lies that have affected Becky and Jacob to bring them together? Or will Jacob rebel and head home to his first love?

Author Bio
Laura Hilton graduated with a business degree from Ozarka Technical College in Melbourne, Arkansas. A member of the American Christian Fiction Writers, she is a professional book reviewer for the Christian market, with more than a thousand reviews published on the Web. Prior to Patchwork Dreams, she published two novels with Treble Heart Books: Hot Chocolate and Shadows of the Past, as well as several devotionals. Laura and her husband, Steve, have five children, whom Laura homeschools. The family makes their home in Arkansas. To learn more about Laura, read her reviews, and find out about her upcoming releases, visit her blog at http://lighthouse–academy.blogspot.com/.

An Interview With Laura:
How has being published changed your life?
Well there’s a lot of administrative stuff that I didn’t know about beforehand. And a lot of things that take me out of my comfort zone. I’m naturally a shy quiet and private person, and suddenly I have to be more willing to talk about what I’m doing.
What is your current work in progress?
I am starting the third book in the Amish of Seymour series, which will be Becky’s friend, Annie’s story.
What would be your dream vacation?
Oh, well, I would love to spend a month or two in Michigan (our whole family loves Michigan and we missed it when we moved away) and just poke around the lighthouses, waterfalls, etc. that make the state great. Also, if I ever have a chance to go overseas, I would love to see Big Ben and visit some of the European castles. Also, I’d love an extended stay at an Amish bed and breakfast.
How do you choose your settings for each book?
Well, most Amish books are set in Ohio and Pennsylvania because that is where the largest communities are. I chose to set mine in Seymour, Missouri, because there is an Amish community there. Missouri is an untapped setting for Amish stories, and it was close enough for me to drive up there for research.
If you could spend an evening with one person who is currently alive, who would it be and why?
Oh, Beverly Lewis. When I grow up I want to write like her. I’d love to talk writing with her.
What is your most difficult writing obstacle, and how do you overcome it?
My most difficult obstacle was trying to write in the living room with five children!  I’ve gotten pretty good at blocking out noises though. Unless the children are fighting or crying I can work through it.

I think you will enjoy this book. It’s a quick read and a great story. I can’t wait to read another one from Laura. You can find Patchwork Dreams by Laura Hilton in stores and online, including Amazon.com.

George Foreman Knock Out the Fat Review

GeorgeForeman

The new George Foreman GRP4B Next Grilleration™ Removable Plate Grill is all about “knocking out the fat”. Grilling is a wonderful part of summer. (And believe me, even though the calendar doesn’t say it’s summer yet, the 95 degree temperature today did!) You can have burgers and steaks with a lot less fat using this grill. They say, “New results of independent testing show that the George Foreman Grill removes up to 42% of fat from quarter-pound burgers made with 80/20 ground chuck beef, translating to a reduction of approximately 89 calories per burger!

GEDC2227

So, we put the George Foreman GRP4B Next Grilleration Grill to the test. I bought 80/20 beef burgers from my local grocery store. These were large, so I was only able to put 2 on the grilling surface. (That worked fine for us, because I can share with my son anyway.) The grill is very easy to use. First plug it in and let it heat for a few minutes. It has an indicator light that lets you know when it’s heating and goes off when it’s ready. Once the grill is ready, you simply place the burgers on the grilling surface and close the lid.

GEDC2229 There is no need to put any oil or anything on the grill surface. In fact they say to definitely not use cooking spray, because it’s bad for the grilling plate. So the burgers just cook themselves for about 4-6 minutes. Right away I could see all the fat dripping off into the drip pan. For only 2 burgers there sure was a lot of it. I prefer my burgers well done, so after 6 minutes I took it off. It was perfectly cooked and ready to eat.

GEDC2230

I was amazed at how much fat the grill took away. This is a much healthier burger. I can feel good about giving my family burgers and other foods without all the fat. My husband would rather have a juicy burger with the fat in it, but I know that this is a healthier option. The burgers did dry out a bit with all the fat gone, but with the right toppings you can still get the great flavors and enjoy the burger as usual. I can't wait to try this with more things like tuna steak (have one waiting in the freezer), chicken, sausage, and more.

Here are a few of the great features this grill offers:

  • 72 square inch grilling surface lets you cook for 4

  • 2 dishwasher-safe removable grill plates for easy clean up

  • Temperature indicator light indicates plates are at grilling temperature

  • Integrated handle is ergonomic & compact

  • George Tough™ Triple non-stick coating is durable & eliminates need for oil

  • Patented sloped grill design knocks out the fat

  • 1 ½" floating hinge works to accommodate thick cuts of meat

  • Embedded heat elements provide consistent heat & rapid recovery time

  • Dishwasher-safe removable plates with cool-touch handles for easy clean up

  • 2 Plates included: 2 ribbed grill plates

  • 2 drip trays catch run off liquids for no-mess clean up

  • 2 spatulas are customized for grill

  • I do not have a dishwasher, so I was not able to try out the easy clean feature. But they are very easy to hand wash. I even let the leftovers sit on it overnight. The plates are easy to take off. Then I just used some warm soapy water and a soft sponge. All the grease and food washed right off with no problems.

You can learn more about the George Foreman GRP4B Next Grilleration™ Removable Plate Grill on their website. And if you’re interested in learning more about the claims to reduce 42% of the fat in burgers, be sure to read and watch the video on this site. You can also order your own grill on the sites listed above.

    GEDC2234

Right now you can get in on the Lean Mean Burger Challenge recipe contest on the George Foreman Cooking Facebook page with the Meal Makeover Moms. You submit your best original burger recipe that has been prepared on any George Foreman Grill. One grand prize winner will receive $1,000 and five finalists will receive $100 gift certificates to GeorgeForemanCooking.com!  Visit http://www.facebook.com/GeorgeForemanHealthyCooking to access the contest and all of the information necessary to enter. This contest will close for entries on June 6, 2011.

Must Have Baby Items + {HALO SleepSack giveaway – Ends 6/13} (CLOSED)

    Halo

One of the first questions that new moms ask is what baby items do I really need? It can be a difficult question to answer, because each mother/family is different about what they use and find most useful.

I am the mother of one son. He is 5 years old, so I’m already seeing changes in baby trends. There are new things that started becoming popular after he was born that I think are great and some I don’t even know much about. But for my personal experience, I did have some “must have” items that we very useful to me with my son.

Of course there are the most useful things you need with a baby, like diapers, bottles (if you’re bottle feeding or planning to supplement or use expressed breast milk at any point), breast pump (if you need it), blankets, bedding, car seat, and more. But what about the other things? What are must-haves?

    My must haves included:
    - Boppy pillow (or other breastfeeding pillow)
-Bouncy seat (handy to have somewhere to lay the baby for us)
    - Onesies- all sizes (I put these on under everything, extra warmth when needed, or by themselves when it was hot)
    - Burp cloths - Wipes (of course for diaper changing, but also for faces and hands, or when they get too many germy kisses from family)
    - Extra sheets (for quick, middle of the night changes)
    - Pack ‘n play (we used ours for a bassinet early, then for containment and play later, and handy for naps & travel crib)
    - Stroller (I used a travel system, which was great to just slip the infant carrier into)
    - Carrier or sling/wrap (I had a front/backpack carrier, but after my son was too big I learned about slings and wraps. I used them when babysitting my nephew & wish I’d know when my son was a baby)
    - SleepSack wearable blanket (This allows baby to be warm enough while reducing the risk of SIDS)

There are so many great baby products, but every family finds the ones that work for them…and the ones that don’t. I asked on Twitter and Facebook to see what some of your favorite baby items were. @DevanW says “A sling and a swing or somewhere else to safely put baby down.” And she’s a momma who knows, with 4 little ones she’s used plenty of baby items over the last 6 years. And @luvmy_babygio agrees with my and says “boppy!” is her favorite too.

Here are some other good reads about baby must haves: “Baby Gear You Can’t Live Without”, “Questions for New Moms”, and “Baby Must Haves”.

What are some of your must have baby items? I know my list could be much longer, and it’s been a while since I’ve had a baby of my own. There are always great new things that make life easier, but sometimes it’s the trusty, old things that are best too. HALO wants to be a must have on every mothers list. Their sleepsacks are a great way to keep your baby safe and warm. See below to win a HALO Sleepsack for yourself (or someone else you know who could use one).

    Ziploc/Robin Miller Summer Grilling Review + {Giveaway – Ends 6/9} (CLOSED)

    ziploc2

Even before joining this campaign, I knew that Ziploc is a brand that I love and trust. This is a product that I already buy and use for my family. In fact, I must admit that I have tried off-brand Ziploc bags, but they are never as good. I always come back to Ziploc and wonder what I was thinking.

As part of the Ziploc/Robin Miller Summer Grilling campaign, I received several Ziploc products to try out for myself. We got some freezer storage bags and slider bags in assorted sizes. I love the quart-size bags for quick, every day things. And the freezer bags are handy for storing leftovers and portioning out food to freeze. One of my favorite features was the expandable bottom bags. This is a great feature for storing things that you need to stand up in the fridge/freezer. Everything I tried was wonderful.

ziploc3 Here are some more tips from Ziploc:
Just in time for summer entertaining, Ziploc® Brand has partnered with Food Network contributor, cookbook author, nutritionist and mom Robin Miller to help  families get more out of their summer festivities, while saving time, money and resources.
Whether prepping tasty meals for the grill, offering creative treats for guests, or packing on-the-go snacks, these time-saving and budget-friendly tips from Miller offer quick and hassle-free storage solutions to make summer entertaining a breeze:
Marinate It — To get the juicy, grilled flavors families love, don’t forget to marinate before cooking, which tenderizes meat, fish and poultry while adding great flavor.
Skip messy bowls and additional clean-up by using Ziploc® Brand Freezer Bags to marinate chicken, pork, beef and fish. Meat and poultry can marinate up to 24
hours, so when you’re ready to grill, simply take the bags from the refrigerator straight to the outdoor grill. A delicious dinner will be ready in minutes!
Dip It — For a fun spin on outdoor entertaining, create a dipping station so guests can put their personal twist on grilled favorites. Get creative by making several
unique dips and serve them with grilled staples like fish, vegetables or meat. Try Miller’s grilled beef kebab recipe with three complimentary dips: chipotle-lime mayo, wasabi soy sauce and roasted red pepper. To offer your guests even more variety, try making the kebabs with beef, chicken, shrimp or portobello mushrooms.
Prep It, Store It, Take It — Prep ahead for barbeques or block parties and make your side dishes and desserts days in advance. Seal in freshness by storing treats in Ziploc® Brand Containers with the Smart Snap™ Seal, which can go from the refrigerator to the cooler to the party with ease. Serve crowd-pleasing savory options like Miller’s spiral pasta with pesto, sundried tomatoes and pine nuts or homemade dips served with chips and pita wedges or sweets like cookies, brownies and bars.
Cool It — With a little planning, the whole family can enjoy nutritious foods throughout the day while enjoying outdoor activities. Before heading out to campgrounds, the beach or the park, pack your cooler with fresh treats for the family. Make cooler space count by organizing like-items together, such as sandwiches on the left and fruits and veggies on the right to maximize space and
make finding treats a snap. Finally, add in sunscreen and a spray bottle filled with water. They’ll feel refreshing to the skin and keep the whole family sunburn free
and feeling cool on a warm day.
Pack It — For no-fuss, budget-friendly outdoor meals and snacks, try packing a picnic for the family instead of purchasing expensive theme-park meals. Make cleaning up a cinch by storing tableware, tongs and serving spoons in Ziploc® Brand Slider Storage and Freezer Bags with the Smart Zip™ Seal for easy access. Prepare for any spills or mishaps by pre-moistening paper towels and storing them in Ziploc® Brand Freezer Bags. Reserve the bags to bring the dirty items home so you can pop them straight into the sink or dishwasher.

    Keeping Your Relationship Fresh

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of TwoOfUs for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

My marriage is the most important thing in my life. I have been with my husband for many years. We're looking forward to celebrating our 11th anniversary this summer. And we've been together for over 16 years...that's more than 1/2 my life. I can't imagine my life without him.

Relationships and marriage are hard work. I will be the first to admit that to you. My husband and I are completely committed to one another, but that doesn't' mean we don't drive each other nuts from time to time. There are times in our lives when we just don't "get" each other. But we're willing to work through it each and every time.

Do you have a place that you can go when you need a little advice about relationships? Sometimes family and friends are really helpful. But there are times when you need an outside perspective. Twoofus.org is a great website with tips on keeping your relationship fresh. Maybe you just need to know when the honeymoon phase will end. Or how do you keep the passion in a long distance relationship? They can help you answer that and more.

You can see a video with Hill Harper, actor and author, share his advice about helping relationships to work. He mentions that it's really important to have conversations, listen to each other. This can be hard for many people to make time for, but I agree that it is a very vital part of every relationship.

I like that twoofus.org has advice for dating couples, married and parenting, military relationships and more. There are different dynamics to each individual relationship. Chicken of the Sea Review

    Chicken of the sea

Mmm, I love tuna. When the weather gets warm here, like it did this week, I don’t want to make a big, hot meal. It’s not fun to cook it, and it doesn’t always sound good to eat either. Tuna salad is a great thing for us to make and enjoy all year long. My whole family likes it, and it’s easy and light.

Chicken of the Sea is a company that packages different tuna products. They have cans and pouches that are shelf stable. We got to try the Chicken of the Sea Tuna in pouches. I loved the flavor of this. There was no need to drain the tuna like I do with the cans. It tasted really fresh and was easy to use.

And right now Chicken of the Sea has a big contest going on. Here’s some more about that:

The Chicken of the Sea Funniest Kids’ Quotes Contest™ Asks Parents to Share the Funny Things Their Children Say
Grand-Prize Winner Will Win a Family Trip to a Disney ParkSAN DIEGO – April 13, 2011 – “Elbow grease? Mom said I only have to use soap and water.”
As most parents know, children can say the funniest things and ask the funniest questions. Now, thanks to Chicken of the Sea, that funny gem could win your family a trip to a Disney park, or a cash prize of $1,000 or $500.
Chicken of the Sea is launching the Chicken of the Sea Funniest Kids’ Quotes Contest™, an interactive contest asking parents to submit the funniest thing their child has ever said with the contest winners being chosen by popular public vote.
Parents are encouraged to visit Chicken of the Sea on Facebook and submit a short, written description showcasing their child’s funny comment or question. The contest submission period will end June 6, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.
Starting June 7 at 9 a.m. PDT, contest participants are encouraged to get their Facebook friends to vote for them once per day. Voting ends June 28, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. The grand-prize winner, first runner-up and second runner-up will be announced Thursday, July 7, 2011 at noon PDT.
“Being a parent myself, I remember the many times my children would look at me, smile and ask the silliest question that would completely catch me off guard,” said John Sawyer, Chicken of the Sea’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “With this contest, we are giving our consumers the opportunity to engage with the brand in a new way, and have some fun in the process.”
The contest builds off of the brand’s new campaign that brings its iconic Mermaid to life. In a recent video, the Mermaid tries to explain to a little boy why Chicken of the Sea is the best tuna with the boy asking “why?” over and over again, as children are known to do quite often.
Submissions are limited to 250 words. The deadline for submissions is June 6, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. Visit www.Facebook.com/ChickenoftheSea for more information and additional rules.
During the contest submission period, Chicken of the Sea will also be giving away prize packs to one random contest entrant each Friday.
A seafood category leader, Chicken of the Sea provides a variety of shelf-stable seafood products, including tuna, salmon, crab, shrimp, oysters, clams, mackerel and sardines. The Chicken of the Sea brand and famous Mermaid icon are among the most recognized brands in America.
The Walt Disney Co. or Facebook are not participants or sponsors of the Chicken of the Sea Funniest Kids’ Quotes Contest™.

You can enter by going to www.Facebook.com/ChickenoftheSea. And you can find Chicken of the Sea tuna and other products at your local grocery store. What is your favorite way to eat tuna?

    Sunsweet D’Noir Prunes Review

    D'Noir Prunes

Prunes have been known for a while as a Super Fruit. They are filled with wonderful antioxidants, as well as fiber and potassium. Prunes are an easy to grab on the go sweet fruit. GEDC2067 My family often eats prunes. My husband needs them from time to time for the extra fiber. And my son has always enjoyed the taste of prunes (maybe because we had to give him prune juice when he was a baby). But I don’t feel guilty giving my son a sweet treat when it’s a healthy prune.

“The Curse of Captain LaFoote” by Eddie Jones Book Review + {Pirate Party Pack Giveaway – 6/2} (CLOSED)

    Curse of Captain LaFoote

If you drowned and the sea spit you out, thrusting you back into an age of pirates, buried treasure and beauty beyond belief… would you stay? Explore this adventure in the new book The Curse of Captain LaFoote” by Eddie Jones.

    BOOK SUMMARY

RICKY BRADSHAW has never sailed the Caribbean Sea, searched for buried treasure or battled pirates on the deck of a Spanish Galleon. He’s never fallen through the floor of Davy Jones’ locker or watched an old fisherman morph into a porpoise. All Ricky knows is his lonely life with his widowed mom in a tiny apartment overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. But all that changes on a snowy Christmas Eve when Ricky’s apartment building burns down and he suffers a seizure, falling into the chilly waters. Suddenly Ricky finds himself thrust into a world where there is surprising beauty on every island, danger around every corner and great honor and glory ahead of him—if only Ricky can summon the courage to survive the curse of Captain LaFoote.

Curse of Captain LaFoote2 AUTHOR BIO

EDDIE JONES has authored four non-fiction books, one young adult novel, and written over a hundred articles that have appeared in over 20 different publications. He is co-founder of Christian Devotions Ministries and a contributing writer for, CBN.com, Common Ground Christian News, The Ocracoke Observer, and  Living Aboard Magazine.  He’s a three-time winner of the Delaware Christian Writers Conference and a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers and Boating Writers International. Eddie sails, surfs and writes in North Carolina. For more information see: http://www.captainlafoote.com/.

Curse of Captain LaFoote3 AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Tell us about The Curse of Captain LaFoote.
EDDIE: When my boys were young, I'd tell pirate stores on the bow of our sailboat. The lead character was Captain Stinky Foot. Captain Stinky Foot was named after my youngest son. If you've ever spent any time on a boat in August with a crew of unwashed young males then this needs no further explanation. I've always been fascinated by the stories of boys snatched away from London and Bristol and forced to serve before the mast. Seems to me life at sea was more fun than peeling potatoes. And more dangerous.
So The Curse of Captain LaFoote is a pirate tale awash in buried treasure, romance and dead men's bones. The truth is, this book and the ones that follow in the Caribbean Chronicle series are love stories. For Ricky Bradshaw, the hero of the book, the story is a quest to find his father, soul mate, and purpose in life.

    What is your lead’s wound?
EDDIE: A friend suggested that I let my lead have epilepsy. She said when she has an episode she sort of zones out—like daydreaming except she can’t stop it. She also said she knows when it’s about to happen. That she smells something like burning wires. So I gave Ricky epilepsy and finished the story.
It wasn’t until much later that I realized the book had a larger purpose. I met another woman at a writer’s conference whose son has epilepsy. During the conference, her son suffered a seizure — the first one he’d ever had without his mother present. The look on her face that morning convinced me that Ricky Bradshaw could be a champion for those suffering from epilepsy.
It’s not cancer or heart disease but over three million Americans live with epilepsy. If the sale of this book can raise awareness, then the book has done its job. For each book sold, the publisher and I will donate “a few pieces of eight” — half a sandy dollar — to the foundation’s Heroes Among Us program. Our goal is to raise ten thousand dollars in honor of Ricky Bradshaw.

What is the spiritual message in your book?
EDDIE: That courage cost. Near the end of the book Ricky has the chance to go back to his old life. We get to do the same thing, go back to our old way of doing things. But Christ says there is a cost for doing the right thing. Ricky faces that choice.

What takeaway value do you hope readers receive after reading this novel?
EDDIE: There are a lot of other deep and important themes explored in the book too. Things like what the poop deck is and why cruise ships no longer use them, the secrets inside Davy Jones' locker, and why you shouldn't walk downwind of a pirate who's just eaten turtle soup.
Seriously, my goal in writing this book was to spur the imagination of young readers. Boys especially. I wanted to create within them a desire to read and set sail for a life of adventure, wherever that journey may take them. Even now I can see Ricky standing on the sugar-white sands of that island just south of Hispaniola. I am that boy. And so are a lot of other boys.

    MY THOUGHTS

The Curse of Captain LaFoote by Eddie Jones was a quick read for me. The story easily captured my attention. The fast moving action is definitely captivating and fun. I like that this book was written with younger readers in mind. It’s not a bedtime story for preschoolers, but it will definitely appeal to the late-elementary/middle school-age kids. And it’s full of pirate adventure and action that will keep a boy’s attention for sure.

Mommy Brings Home the Bacon by Nikki Mark Children’s Book Review

    Mommy Brings Home the Bacon

If you’re a mom who works outside of the home, I’m sure at some point you’ve had to explain to your children why you go to work. Children want their parents around when they are young. They don’t always understand why we can’t always be with them and do everything they want to do. When you work outside of the home, time with your children is so important. In her book Mommy Brings Home the Bacon, Nikki Mark tells what it’s like for her to go to work while her children go to school. She has to “bring home the bacon”.

Mommy Brings Home the Bacon” is a heartwarming children’s book that explores the ouching relationship between a young boy and his working mom.
Told from the young boy’s perspective, the whimsical narrative reflects a child’s imaginative interpretation of why mommy goes to work, and the beautiful bond that develops as a result.
Bringing simplicity and lightheartedness to an emotional topic, “Mommy Brings Home the Bacon” fosters a child’s appreciation for a working mother, while simultaneously easing the minds of moms who balance the difficult responsibilities of financially supporting their household and raising the children they so dearly love.

This is a really cute story. It’s perfect for young children who don’t really know why Mommy has to work. It explains it in a perfect way for little ones to better understand. I am a stay at home mom, so my son has only know me being home with him. (If you ask him, he’ll tell you my job is “taking care of me”.) He enjoyed this story and learning about how in some families the Mommy & Daddy both work.

The Mommy Brings Home the Bacon book by Nikki Mark is available from Amazon.com. You can also learn a little more about it on the website. And you can connect with her on Facebook and Twitter.

Spanish for Kids: Las Estaciones DVD Review + {Giveaway – Ends 6/7} (CLOSED)

    Spanish for kids Las Estaciones
If you’re looking for a fun, easy way to teach your children a little Spanish, this is just the thing for you. The new Spanish for Kids: Las Estaciones (The Seasons) DVD is made with young children in mind. Maybe you want your child to learn another language, or maybe you just want a well-rounded education for them. No matter your intentions, your children will enjoy the DVD and learn some important Spanish language skills. Even if they are just watching this DVD for fun (and it is fun!) they will learn more than they realize.

Produced by Whistlefritz, Spanish for Kids is an award-winning Spanish immersion DVD series featuring the adorable Fritzi, a lovable, animated mouse who interacts with live-action adults and children to help teach Spanish.  In Las Estaciones (The Seasons), Fritzi wants to celebrate his birthday, which comes in the Fall.  With the help of his friend Maria, young viewers learn about the many joys associated with all four seasons, from sledding and snowball fights in winter (el invierno), to trick-or-treating in autumn (el otoño).  It’s a year-round celebration for young viewers to enjoy with Fritzi and all his Whistlefritz friends!

Winner of more than 20 awards, Whistlefritz was founded in 2006 by a mom who wanted to teach her own children Spanish, but was frustrated by the lack of high-quality Spanish immersion programs. Building on the belief that switching back and forth between English and Spanish during the learning process makes it harder for a child to master the new language, Whistlefritz DVDs engage children in “Spanish immersion”: learning by hearing and speaking Spanish without any English translation.
Research has shown this Spanish immersion teaching technique to be the most effective way to teach young children a second language. Each upbeat program in the Spanish for Kids DVD series combines whimsical storylines, colorful animation and graphics, delightful characters, live action footage, and irresistible Latin music that children will want to experience again and again.
A valuable teaching tool to add to any home video educational library, Spanish for Kids DVDs have received numerous national honors and accolades from iParenting Media, the Parents’ Choice Foundation, The National Parenting Center, Dr. Toy, The Dove Foundation, Learning Magazine’s Teachers’ Choice Awards and others.

My son enjoyed the fun little Fritzi once again. The video is great for young children. They can learn while being entertained, and I think that’s the perfect way to teach little kids. And when they think learning is fun, they’ll be excited to learn new things.

The Spanish for Kids: Las Estaciones (The Seasons) DVD is geared towards children ages 2-7. The other titles in the series Spanish for Kids include Cha Cha Cha, Adentro y Afuera (Inside and Out), A Bailar! (Let’s Dance!), Vamos a Jugar (Let’s Play) and Los Animales (Animals). You can learn more about these on their website- www.whistlefritz.com. The featured DVD and these other titles are all available for  purchase online.
